Memorable 80's Commercials
69
Oh the 80's! Big hair, bright colors, and great television commercials. There is always such conversation around commercials during the Super Bowl that I got to thinking about what were some of the most memorable commercials from my childhood. I may have been young but I distinctly remember singing along to commercials like “Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun.” Can you name that company? If you guessed McDondalds you are right! Commercials today are great but there were some fantastic classics from the 80s. So here are my top picks from a variety of categories.
Hamburger Wars
McDonalds had some great commercials in the 80's. Remember Hamburgler, Grimmace, and the rest of the Ronald McDonald gang? Burger King had some classic "King" commercials where the King went around town singing with children about the great things that they can do if they believe in magic. But my favorite commercials from the burger wars of the 80s was the Wendy's "Where's the Beef" commercial. Who doesn't remember that little old lady with her two side kicks yelling into the phone, "Where's the Beef?"
Toys
A collection of commercials would not be complete without mentioning the toy commercials of the 80's. There were oh so many, where to start? It seems that there were a plethora of dolls from Cabbage Patch Kids to Teddy Ruxpin. Here are a few more to remember.
My Buddy: Remember him? Where ever I go he goes, My Buddy and me! But don't forget that My Buddy had a Kid Sister to appeal to all of the little girls.
Monchhichi Dolls: Monchhichi Monchhichi oh so cute and cuddly!
Toys R Us: From bikes to trains to video games who could forget the singing and dancing of Geoffrey and the kids in the Toys R Us commercials.
Coke Vs. Pepsi
I'm sure that everyone can remember when coke changed its formula to the New Coke. This almost caused riots in the streets as the traditionalists rejected the new and "improved" formula. Our family was coke drinkers and it was definitely not well received in our home. Whether you are a fan of Coca Cola or a fan of Pepsi, you can most surly remember sayings like "Coke is it!" or "Pepsi, the Choice of a New Generation."
Alcohol and Cigarettes
The sinful temptations of cigarettes are no longer on tv, but who could forget the rugged and handsome Marlboro man? Beer, wine, and liquor commercials are still seen on television today but I cannot think of a commercial that has as catchy of a jingle as some of the ones in the 80s.
Wine coolers were all the rage in the 80s. Remember the two older gentleman for Bartles and James wine coolers? But my all time favorite bad habit commercial of the 80s has to be the Seagram's Golden Wine Coolers with a young and handsome Bruce Willis. Although I was young in the 80s, I knew that there was something great about Mr. Willis.

This Hub brought back so many funny moments on TV. I wasn't a teenager yet when "Where's the Beef" slogan came out, I just thought the old lady was funny. Then I got a tee-shirt that read Where's the Beef on it and my mom made me change. I can kind of understand now. :))
Great step back in time!
I love this! The young Bruce Willis is amazing.. and I remember those "Where's the Beef?" commercials! I was a huge Rainbow Brite and My Little Ponies fan in those days, but I do remember a few of those commercials!
What a great hub! LOL I am smiling as I write this. Slinky was the best one for me-even though I had a 'thing' for bad boy Willis. It just has such a catchy tune.
Love! the 'do' and Olivia Newton John 'Grease' look there in the photo, LOL Voted up and AWESOME / Funny.
I was a child and preteen in the 1980s, so I remember these well. I had a slinky, but not a My Buddy.
I had to have a laugh over this, Cara, and also to admit a slight crush on the Marlboro Man...despite his unhealthy personal habits! :)
I'm old enough to remember watching all these "historical" commercials. Voting this Up and Interesting.
I agree with Denise = slinky was my favorite but Bruce Willis was cute. Anyone remember him with Cybil Shepherd in Moonlight. They were detectives but he was the front man b/c no one would hire her as the detective. Of course nowadays, all sorts of shows have women in strong leads.
Ok i seriously never understood the Wendy's Where is the Beef advert. For me though one of my best commercial was the Michael Jackson Pepsi generation commercial
Peace!!
I love the 80's! Thanks for the fun reminiscing. :)
My Buddy! I still remember the song! Is it my imagination or did he also have a Kid Sister?
The one that sticks in my mind was more of an infomercial. Just the other day I caught myself humming "Who broke my window..." under my breath. I don't know where it came from, but when I realized what it was I had to laugh!
Fun hub, Cara. I really enjoyed the Seagrams commercial. I recall seeing a few Seagrams Golden in our fridge at camp. My mom, who I rarely saw drinking as a child, would occasionally have one. I think I may understand her inspiration. I also remember the My Buddy commercials and can sing the whole tune. I inherited two Buddies in my kindergarten classroom! Thanks for the flashback!
Well that was fun! I saw this hub a few weeks back and had intended to read it and then of course forgot. Glad I found my memory again. Very entertaining; you brought back some memories I had forgotten about but now totally enjoyed.

Great hub. I really needed a burst of entertainment! I was just a baby in the late 80's, so I suppose I missed out on a great time. The slinky commercial is plain awesome. I remember seeing a few commercials in my day for cigarettes, but what I really recall is the full page magazine ads with the Marlboro cowboys. Oh how things change!
