Tangled Party Ideas
Throwing a children's birthday party can often be stressful for parents and many questions start to enter their minds. How many kids are there going to be? What will I feed the guests? What are the kids going to do? Well thinking about a theme is a good place to start. My daughter just turned 4 and she had a Disney Tangled birthday party. Here is how we did it.
Tangled Party Invitation
There are many ways to invite your guests to your party but this is of course a party for a princess. You could purchase invitations that have Rapunzel on the cover or you could make your own. When I created the invitations for my daughter's party, they read:
Princess Grace requests your presence to let your hair down and get tangled up in fun at AGC to celebrate her 4th birthday on Saturday, January 15th. Please arrive at 5:45 for the fun will begin promptly at 6:00. You are then invited to continue the adventure with Grace at her Royal Palace. Her Royal Highness looks forward to your visit however, if you are unable to attend please call xxx-xxxx.
I then sealed the envelopes with a Tangled sticker and addressed them. The return was written with Princess Grace, followed by her address. For the recipients, I put "Duke Marco" and "Duchess Olivia" with their addresses. It makes receiving the invitation even more fun when your envelope already reflects the theme of the party.

Decorations for a Tangled Birthday Party
Once the invitations have gone out, it's time to start the fun. First, what are you going to have the kids do at this party? For me the answer was easy. My daughter had already decided to have her party at her gymnastics center. This fit perfectly with our theme. Rapunzel swung all around in the movie so what better way to reflect that part of the adventure than by swinging and running around on the equipment at gymnastics? Don't have a gymnastics center around you? No problem. Hold your party at a local park. That way your guests can still enjoy the fun of running, climbing and jumping around. If a park won't work then just take it outdoors. Make your own yard a place of adventure.
The decorations and paper goods can be easily purchased. There is everything from lunch plates to dessert plates to napkins and cups. There are banners and balloons and horns to blow. Everything that you need to make this party a hit.
Food for a Disney Tangled Party
Now for the food. I usually create menu that fits with the theme. Since Tangled takes place during the Medieval era I thought the food should reflect this. I recently wrote a hub about pizza in which it talks about pizza as originally being the poor man's food. So we had poor man's pizza and bread for our menu. Nice and easy even at a location away from home. If you are having the party at your own house, you could also try these ideas:
- Fried meat (corn dogs)
- Twisted up potatoes (curly fries)
- Plates of cheese and crackers set out to munch on
- Fresh fruit
- The cake
Tangled Tower Cake
Step by Step Directions for a Tangled Tower Birthday Cake
And for the culminating moment of the party, the cake. I made a tangled tower cake to continue with the theme. Don't feel like this is out of your league, it really was easy to do.
- You will need two 8 inch round cake pans, a cookie sheet, the big top cupcake mold, two box cake mixes (flavor of your choice), white frosting (at least two containers), food coloring (purple, green, and pink), a sugar cone, non-stick cooking spray, pastry bags or sandwich bags, a frosting knife, a 12 inch round cake round, a cooling rack, a chop stick, and a small Rapunzel doll (or any other Tangled decorations).
- I started with two box cake mixes and made one box of the batter according to the package directions. Then I sprayed the pans and poured half of the mix in one 8 inch pan and half in the other. Then I put it in the oven to cook according to the package.
- While that part of the cake was baking I made the second mix and sprayed the big cupcake mold (top and bottom) and poured half in one part and half in the other then place each part on the cookie sheet. I had never used this before so I was not really sure how long to cook it and my oven bakes on the hot side. I started with 20 minutes at 350 degrees and checked adding 5 minutes or so as needed. I believe I ended up with about 28 minutes but watch and check according to your own oven.
- Allow all pieces of the cake to cool completely on the cooling rack. Don't rush this because the frosting will melt.
- After everything has cooled, the fun part begins. First you need to "trim" the top of each of the 8 inch cakes to create a flatter surface. Just take a long, sharp knife and slice the top of the cake so that it creates a flat surface. Then spread a small amount of frosting in the center of the cake round. This will help to hold the cake in place as you build each layer. Place one 8 inch cake on top.
- Next, mix the frosting with the purple dye. You can choose to make this as light or dark as you would like. Frost the outside with a thin layer. This is called the crumb layer. It helps to make the next layer of frosting look smooth. Frost the top a little thicker since this will be the layer between your cakes. Place the second round cake on top and repeat.
- Follow the same "trimming" procedure with top of the "bottom" cupcake and the bottom of the "top cupcake and frost in the same manner stacking first the bottom half of the cupcake and then the top. Place the chopstick through the center for stability. Frost the cone and place over the chopstick. Now allow the frosting to set (about an hour).
- After the frosting sets, use the frosting spreader to frost the cake a second time but this time creating a smooth finish.
- Next mix more frosting but on a smaller scale with the green dye. Put a spoonful in the pastry bag or sandwich bag and make a small cut off of the tip (or corner) of the bag. Gently squeeze frosting along and up the side of the cake to make the vines. Be creative, there are no mistakes!
- Then use the pink dye to mix with another small amount of frosting and repeat with another pastry bag. This time write your message on the cake round on the front of the cake. For the flowers you can use a decorating tip to make the flowers or buy some already made from a cake store and randomly place them on the cake. This is what I did.
- Finally place Rapunzel carefully on the top with her hair flowing down the side and step back to look at your master piece.
Yummy! A happy princess.
Don't forget to dress for the part!

I loved the idea for the party invitations. Kids love mail and who wouldn't want an invitation to arrive for "Duchess Sarah". Very cute idea. Excellent cake too.
Great article Cara! I did a princess themed party when Angelina turned 5 and she loved it. Your cake was so good, I can't believe you made it yourself!!
Great hub with clear directions on making the cake. Princess Grace looks like she's really enjoying it.

Wow! Good Luck for your upcoming idea! Have fun!
And Happy New Year!
Tangled is such an adorable movie. At this time it's my favorite Disney movie. My granddaughter's 5th birthday was also a Tangled party except we ordered the cake BUT she's already planning her 6th for October. Excellent hub Cara!
Tangled is an amazing movie! This party idea is definitely out of this world. If someone really wants to go above and beyond with the cake (more so), then there is always the possibility of working with fondant :) Thank you for sharing this! This is an awesome idea for a party; voted up!
